Environmental Policy

Last updated: 28 July 2025

Rusty Design is committed to reducing the environmental impact of our work as a specialist provider of bespoke props and scenic builds for film, TV, and cultural productions. We believe creativity and sustainability go hand in hand — and we are developing practical, circular methods to minimise our environmental footprint at every stage of our process.

Materials & Waste Reduction

  • We prioritise the use of reclaimed and repurposed timber and materials wherever possible.

  • Offcuts and surplus materials are stored and reused internally to minimise waste.

  • Waste is sorted into general, cardboard/paper, and metal/plastic recycling streams.

Sustainable Design & Innovation

  • Our prop and scenic designs are tailored to reduce material use, simplify construction, and allow for reuse or recycling.

  • We are developing a closed-loop recycling process for PLA materials, including in-house shredding, extrusion, and degradation methods to significantly reduce single-use plastic waste.

  • Low-VOC paints and bio-based resins are used wherever possible to reduce air and water pollution.

Transport & Logistics

  • Most of our deliveries are managed in-house, allowing us to plan routes efficiently and consolidate trips where possible.

  • We are exploring lower-emission transport options for future growth.

Workshop & Operations

  • Our South Glamorgan workshop is partly equipped with LED lighting and we aim to transition fully in the near future.

  • Waste management and sustainability discussions are embedded in every project planning phase.

Future Commitments

  • We aim to develop a preferred supplier list based on environmental performance, and will seek FSC-certified or sustainably sourced timber when virgin wood is required.

  • We are working toward our goal of formalising a circular model of prop production, which includes plans for a material take-back scheme and continued development of our PLA recycling capabilities.

  • We will continue to educate and engage our team in sustainable practices, with the goal of implementing regular training and project sustainability checklists.

Rusty Design believes sustainable production is not only possible — it’s essential. Our aim is to lead by example in low-impact, high-quality creative fabrication.
